faqtext=Giclee Printmaking......Some Frequently Asked Questions
The Origins of Giclee Print Making ?
The Giclee printing (pronounced "ghee-clay") process was born in the early 1990's as rock musician Graham Nash and his associate Mac Holbert uncovered a new capability of the Iris inkjet printer called the 3047. These early machines had been developed for digital graphic proofing but it had not occurred to the manufacturer that its equipment would be adopted by artists as a digital method of fine art printing. In 1991, thanks to Mr. Nash's vision, the world's first digital fine art atelier opened its doors. Since this early beginning, the technology in equipment, media, inks and craftsmanship have advanced immeasurably.
Giclee printing has many advantages over other printmaking methods. For example, each piece is individually produced allowing you to order one reproduction at a time if desired, so the artist is not obligated to finish an edition. You can order prints as needed without large up-front costs and storage problems associated with offset lithography. This allows you to test market a new idea or image. Giclee printing affords you more control of your career by giving you the ability to start self-publishing fine art reproductions in modest quantities. Artists can build inventory slowly over time in response to the market.
Why a Giclee Print ?
The benefits are numerous and varied. Versatility in subject matter and the ability to experiment. Since the initial investment in a Giclee edition is minimal, the artist can take more risks to find out what is acceptable to the market and will sell. This flexibility allows the artist more creative freedom and help prevent costly mistakes. Additionally it is becoming more and more widely acknowledged that Giclee prints offer richness, detail and depth that set them apart from traditional offset lithography.
Are there any limits to the size of my order ?
No order is too small or to large for us to handle. You may order one print at a time if you wish. We have 2 wide format printers so we can accommodate large print runs as well.
All prints are subject to our tight quality control regardless of cost or quantity.
What is the expected life of a Giclee print ?
The most important fact to remember is that all color fades. As far as Giclee prints are concerned, some original watercolors and most lithographs will fade faster than a well-made Giclee. Unlike lithographs and serigraphs, Giclees have undergone extensive, third-party fade-testing. While the predicted display life depends on many variables, under typical home or office lighting , and depending on the papers used, giclees made with wide-gamut pigmented inks are estimated to last over 90 years without noticeable fade. All of our testing information comes from independent testing labs and the manufacturers of the materials we use. Storm Imaging shall not be responsible for any damage to our prints from improper handling or from exposure to extreme environmental conditions.
How accurate is the color?
The resolution and color can be brilliant and is superior to other methods of art reproduction. However, you must be aware that due to the limitations of process inks, some colors fall outside of the printable color spectrum. During the proofing process we work closely with you to achieve the look and feel in the print that is most appealing and closest to the original as possible.
What materials do I need to send to get started?
You need to send us one of the following.......
Your Original Artwork, or send a 4x5 production quality transparency of your image.
A CD or ZIP (MAC) disc containing a professional scan of your image, which will need to be saved as an Adobe RGB 1998 tiff file at 300 dpi ( at final size - including any bleed ).
If sending a digital file, a reference print or photo to accompany it is recommended.
When sending transparencies of your artwork it is very important to remember that we will color match to the transparency and if it does not look like the original, your print will not look like the art either. Examine each transparency carefully before sending them to us.
On subsequent orders your image is stored via digital file and is ready for printing.
Do you offer Photography and Professional Drum Scanning ?
We can have a professional 4x5 inch transparency made of your original artwork and then it will be scanned with our professional drum scanner to produce a sharp and clean digital file ready for printing.
Alternatively we can have your artwork scanned with the latest in digital technology. Phase One, the world's leader in professional digital capture technology - Powerphase FX. It is the world's highest resolution digital camera back with 396 million pixels, (many professional digital cameras have between 2 and 6 million pixels), no noise in any colour channels, and if needed can capture a one Gigabyte file with no interpolation.
I wish to order reprints, what do I do ?
It's as easy as this. Contact us by e-mail, or telephone. Since we will have your image on file no further set up fee will be required. Call us on +61 2 9516 0466 or email studio@giclee.com.au
Do you charge for delivery?
Delivery is not included in the price of our printing, therefore you can collect your giclee print from us or we can have it shipped to you wherever you are. We can ship all over the world via a specialist carrier which includes packaging. Please call us for a quote or email us.
What are payment terms?
We request fifty percent deposit with your order and full payment upon completion of your work. You can send a cheque, direct deposit the money or you can simply pay with your Visa, MasterCard or Bankcard.
What bleed do you recommend for canvas stretching ?
Your canvas artwork is stretched onto a thick 40mm (4cm) wooden frame. If you are sending your own image, you will need to allow a 70mm border in order to wrap the canvas around the frame. If there is part of the image you wish to keep from wrapping (e.g. a hand, face etc) we can suggest an effective option to do this and achieve the wrapped look of the canvas.
You can simply have the canvas wrapped with a white edge or we can sample a colour from the image and use this as the wrapped edge.

filerequirementstext=file requirements and preparation
What can I send you?
A digital file, 35mm-5x4inch transparency or negative or a photo print upto A4 in size. We will then scan these using our state of the art drum scanner to the required size for a sharp and detailed output.
Should your digital file require resizing then we will do this with a sophisticated piece of software especially designed for the digital workflow.
What are acceptable files?
Send your digital file on a CD or DVD as an RGB Tiff file at 300dpi final size. A minimum of 220dpi is required for sharp output.
We can achieve acceptable image quality with 100-200dpi but these will not be as sharp and detailed as larger files.
Can I send you a digital file from my own camera?
We accept files from all types of digital cameras including jpgs, tif and raw files. We have had great success in enlarging these files with our sophisticatd software and then outputting them on canvas or watercolour paper.
How do I prepare my digital files?
One of the most important aspects of fine art printing is the quality of the input. In order to obtain the best possible output please follow these simple instructions before sending us your file.
Due to our colour managed workflow please convert your file to Adobe RGB1998.
We accept all types of files but our requested file type is RGB Tiff set at 300dpi or a minimum of 220dpi. You may compress the file using LZW compression, this is a lossless compression type and will not affect the file should you need to continually re-open it.
You can also save it as a high resolution jpg file and email it to us. However, you should avoid re-opening these files if possible due to jpg being a lossy compression resulting in possible degradation in the file.
How is my original painting made ready for high quality digital reproduction?
We can have your artwork scanned with the latest in digital technology. Phase One, the world's leader in professional digital capture technology - Powerphase FX. Being the world's highest resolution digital camera back with 396 million pixels, (many professional digital cameras have between 2 and 6 million pixels), can scan with no noise in any colour channels, and if needed can capture a one Gigabyte file with no interpolation.
